Elite Event ‘Yelp’ at Piccolo Arancio

The Yelp Elite Event took place on 20 May at our restaurant: find out more about this unusual event!

Yelp is the online guide that helps people find the best places to sleep, eat, shop, have a drink and enjoy some relaxation thanks to user experiences. Participants in the event had fun playing games to discover the aromas, scents and ingredients of our cuisine amidst colours and blindfolded courses, but most of all, they enjoyed the menu on offer: from bread crostini with chicory and Colonnata lard to fried cod and courgette flowers; from orange ravioli to curried butterflies; from tonnarelli with ham/lemon/thyme to saltimbocca alla romana to finish with a delicious panna cotta and strawberry topping.

The accolades keep coming in for our restaurant, which for years now has stood out for its excellent cuisine and is considered one of the best restaurants in Rome.

Rental in Rome, a famous website for rentals in the capital, has produced a series of documentaries entitled “Experience Rome” in which the most fascinating and evocative areas of the city are described and useful information is provided for an unforgettable stay. The third part of ‘Experience Rome’ set in the Trevi Fountain district also features Piccolo Arancio, which is celebrated for its tasty cuisine and typical Roman specialities.

After the many international awards received over the years, our restaurant was even featured in a book published in the United States entitled ‘7 Brides for 7 Brothers‘.

The book was written by Roxanne St. Claire, a famous American writer and author of some forty thriller and romance novels published worldwide and all of which have become bestsellers. The writer lives on an island along the coast of Florida but often comes to Rome and every time she cannot help but visit us to taste our cuisine. Roxanne St. Claire mentioned the Little Orange, imagining that the protagonist of the book worked in the restaurant note the ‘Best Food in Rome. Possibly the world.”!

As The Roman Foodie explains, unfortunately, where there are tourists there are also tourist traps, so you have to be careful and look for ‘hidden gems’ as the most authentic restaurants in Rome are very unlikely to surround the Trevi Fountain. Legends and curiosities of the Trevi Fountain

The English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote that ‘fountains are enough to justify a trip to Rome’ and he was right because the city is full of beautiful and famous fountains by some of the most important architects and artists of all time. But the most scenic and well-known is undoubtedly the Trevi Fountain, located a stone’s throw from our restaurant.

The fountain is one of the symbols of Rome and has been the setting for numerous films, such as the famous scene in Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita‘, in which Anita Ekberg enters the fountain and invites Marcello Mastroianni to bathe with her, or the scene in ‘Totòtruffa 62‘, in which Totò attempts to sell the fountain to a clueless tourist, pretending to be its rightful owner.

It is an extraordinary work of art to which legends and curiosities are linked that still fascinate Romans and tourists from all over the world. As we see it, it was built from 1732 onwards, designed by the Roman architect Nicola Salvi, but unfortunately he died without being able to see it finished and the fountain was completed in 1762 by the architect Giuseppe Pannini. The result was a wonderful monument in late Baroque style whose theme is the sea.

Among the many legends and ancient rituals of which it is the guardian, the best known and oldest tradition is that whoever throws a coin by standing with his back to the fountain, keeping his eyes closed and his right hand on his left shoulder, will be guaranteed to return to the Eternal City. But if instead of one coin you throw two, this will ensure that you meet the love of your life. And if you throw a third one, it will make your wish to marry come true. According to another legend, with an even more romantic tone, when water was still being drawn from the fountain, girls would make their fiancés who were leaving drink a glass of it, which they would then shatter as a sign of good luck and fidelity.

Yet another legend has it that the large vase resting on the parapet overlooking Via della Stamperia, which the Romans nicknamed the Asso di Coppe (Ace of Cups) because its shape resembles the symbol depicted on a playing card, was placed there by Salvi to block the view of the work of a barber who had his shop right next to it and who harassed him with constant criticism and negative judgements.

Also linked to the fountain are many curiosities that not everyone knows. Why is it called the Trevi Fountain? There are various hypotheses as to the origin of the name, but the most accredited one takes us back to the Middle Ages, when three roads crossed in the same place to form a ‘trivium’, i.e. an intersection formed, as the Latin word suggests, by three roads. Another curiosity is that around 3,000 euros a day in coins are collected from the fountain, which are then given to Caritas. Yet another is that unlike many other monuments, birds, which generally litter a lot, do not approach here because the fountain is electrified and gives small electric shocks to the birds that perch on it.

Amatriciana: a classic of Roman cuisine

History and curiosities of one of Italy’s most loved, discussed and fought-over typical dishes.

The correct term for this delicious pasta that has been feeding Romans and tourists for generations comes from the town of Amatrice in the province of Rieti, where they invented this type of pasta, which before the introduction of the tomato (which only arrived in Europe after Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America) was in white and was called ‘Gricia’. Amatrice is on the Via Salaria (built by the Romans, and called the ‘salt road’, because through it they went to fetch salt at S.Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic), so it has always been connected to Rome, and for this reason its cooks have always moved to Rome, and by moving to the capital they also imported the use of Amatriciana, which was so successful that it was declared ‘Roman‘, as a dish of Roman tradition. There is talk of its recipe in Rome as early as 1700. Although its original name would be Amatriciana, for us Romans who use shortened words, Amatriciana has become Matriciana. As far as its preparation is concerned, there is one thing you cannot go wrong about, the original recipe calls for the use of guanciale (pork cheek).
